View Full Version : Eating of Faeces
As we all know this is a very unpleasant habit and usually begins at puppy stage. Experts say that this is down to a lack of protein, vitamins or minerals although we all know that the protein level for our Apsos should be low unless in whelping. Have any of you experienced your pooch eating such matter?

Yes. The day after I got Diesel he went outside for a pooh and promptly ate it.
When hubby tried to get him away he got quite vicious...as in "food territorial" so I think that was what Diesel had come to know as food.
As you know he was seriously undernourished when I got him...
But also, he lived in an upstairs flat, and only had access to a small balcnony at best (if he was EVER allowed out of his box) so I have wondered whether he had done it to clean up after himself in the box?
I guess I'll never know.
Thankfully now he prefers food from tins!! ;)

But hey, that was the past eh? Today is what matters...
Ive always said its a good job he cant talk or he would have me in tears .......
Roxy can do this quite often if you dont watch her like a hawk !!
she started as a pup and when I mentioned it to the vet he said there is a couple of reasons ..... 1) They see you when you are out picking up after them so they copy!!! or 2) They smell the goodness from their food and basically want it.
Pineapple in the food is supposed to put them off it or tablets from good pet shops or the vet put in their food can help.
I tried all with Rox and she has got better but like I mentioned you do have to keep an eye. It really is disgusting though :?
Thankfully Holly has never bothered because I did worry that she would copy Roxy. xxx

My sister has a 2 year old rottie that not only eats his own pooh, he also eats other dogs pooh when he is out in the park. He particularly loves ones that have dried up in the sun, and also fox and deer pooh. My sister has tried everything to get him to stop, but he won't. He just loves it. It's disgusting because his breath stinks and he likes to give "kisses".

If he eats some of his own with pineapple in it, do you think that'll put him off the taste altogether? I hope so for my sisters sake - diesel (the rottie) has a sensitive stomach and always seems to have something wrong with him too so it's only a matter of time before this poo eating lands him in the vet.

Some of our apso's love pineapple...... ;) ;) ;) ....I have been asked about this subject many times, what causes it??? why do they do it??, How can you stop it??? Nobody actual knows why they do it, lacking something in their diet, keeping their area's clean, coping their mothers, who knows....... :?: Now I do know that if you have tried all other methods and they have worked, then the problems has been cured. However if you have tried and they have not worked then could I suggest that you try putting brewerys yeast powder in their food. I dont mean put it on top of their feaces, as any waste matter should always be picked up as soon as possible. I mean put a teaspoon of the powder in with their food, you can mix it, sprinkle on the top, as long as they digest the brewers yeast.... :!: You might laugh when you read dont put it on of feaces, but when I have spoken with other people relating to this topic, they say it did not work, I actually asked them what they did with the powder and they said put on feaces that was already in the garden. Well of course thats not going to work....  The yeast gives off a fowl smell when the apso is eliminating and that puts them off... Even when the feaces has been left for a period of time, or the sun has dried it.... If you dont believe me, give it a go, let me know the outcome........ Maddie xx
