Very serious thought must be given to choosing a Stud Dog. For those who have experienced this, how did you choose the stud, what did you look for to enhance your Bitch's weaker points.

[color=#0000FF]That all depends on what you want to improve in your bitch, also what you think may compliment your bitch for example and this is just a simple example i am NOT saying that anyones bitch has a bad mouth but say that your bitches mouth was very close and you would like to improve that aspect then you would use a stud that had the correct bite or even one that had the opposite to your bitches then this MAY correct the bite, I hope you understand what i mean as i said this is just a simple example, there are a lot more than that, support from your breeder is a good thing whenever possible. What i always think is that you need to look at your bitch very critically and look at what her weaknesses are you wont be able to correct things all in one go it can take years.... there is no perfect dog or bitch. I know we all think that ours are perfect but you have to be truthfull about it. Its hard to find faults with your babies but its got to be done if you are serious about breeding, a good foundation bitch is a good start from a reputable breeder, but as i say this can all take years and even then you may never achieve what you set out to, Correct me if i am wrong anyone out there but i have tried to put it as simple as possible. A lot of people think that you can just put a dog to a bitch and thats all there is to it, I know that you have really looked into what you are doing and also ask for lots of advice, you have been planning this for a while and i know you are looking into every aspect of breeding your bitch...... But there are many out there that don't, They should take a leaf out of your book, Well done. XXX OK i am off my soap box now.

yup i understand exactly what your saying pauline, it took my ages to decide apon a stud dog for my girl, and im more than happy with the dog that was used, i liked him as a pup and he hasnt dissapointed me over the years, in fact ive grown to like him even more, i spent a lot of time watching dogs in the ring, studying pedigrees, going back through books to see how the dogs in the pedigrees looked, talking to the breeder of my bitch and to the breeder of the stud dog, i also asked freinds outwith the breed who either show, breed, judge or a combination of all three for tips and advice, i tried to get as much info as i possibly could. ive only bred the one litter so perhaps im not the best to give comment but these are just my thoughts xxx

I Agree with you Pamela, i tend to watch from when they are puppies watching their movement conformation etc. also asking around different friends or even people around the ring, i suppose we are lucky being able to do that. Its took me 3 years to find the stud that i want to use on one of my dogs, (he was right under my nose all the time)

I agree with everything you are saying Pauline - it all makes total common sense too. I do know that some ppl who really do not realise just put 'any' dog to 'any' bitch and hope fort he best but I have learn't alot of late and I know this can be treacherous. As you say, sometimes 'opposites' work (as in mouth) but somtimes they don't.

I have been researching for some time now but even to this day, every ounce of advice will certainly be taken on board. I still look at the list you kindly prepared for me to this day so that I don't forget anything in readiness for the birth. I have to or I would forget because as you say, it takes years to perfect (if) a bitch but to me it takes years of sound knowledge to rear a bitch to breed successfully and then rear the pups too.

Well the owner of the stud I am using will be meeting me soon to check Lexi over and to say 'hello' if you like and she does know that Lexi is from good stock. So fingers crossed that all goes well - it's took alot of time in finding the correct stud. Thank you Pauline for this reply. xx

It took me ages to understand a Pedigree Pamela - god I found it confusing but now I do understand what it all means and I bought the Champions book this year :D :D and check etc - I could never have done this at one time so I feel quite chuffed but on saying this, Im way off being anywhere near as good as you and Pauline ;)

We all have to start somewhere Lia and you are going in the right direction Its good that the stud dog owner is meeting you she / he should be able to give you some good pointers we will help anyway that we can but soon you are going to know more than us and we will be coming to you for help & advice, you are being reponsible Lia and as i said you have planned this for a while, just wait till you start posting puppy photos. You will have to have a subject pups for sale as everyone will be wanting to have pups. the only thing with that is that you would want to buy all the pups

Awww thank you very much Pauline for the compliments, I do appreciate it. I'm certainly trying. I think it will be a long way off yet love before you all ask ME for advice - shinio -     but thanks for putting your trust in me        . Yes I am trying to be as close to responsible as I can and have Lexi and the pending pups at heart. And as for puppies, I know it will be extremely difficult to let them go but I tell you one thing, although I already have some ppl for the pups (depending on how many she has) I know that I could trust you members on here to have one as I know you have good, loving and safe homes...................it'll be just my luck she will have ONE PUP

Just wanted to say, that I agree with other members posts. It has been enjoyable reading them, getting the feel of the members knowledge and feelings about the breed. You are right in what you say about some people, not doing any research just letting bitch to dog and hoping for the best.. This is not a responsible way to go about things. Especially if you are serious about trying to improve on what you already have at the moment... You need to see faults in your own dogs, which you can not always see yourself.... Mind you others that go over your dog, can and will tell you conflicting views.... Best way to know is to compare with the breed standard.. As that is what your aim is..... Maddie xx
