Hi Thanks everyone You are right Lia but the pups are even further North in Prudhoe Northumberland I have just been shopping looking for some cushion flooring for the whelping box for Jodie its 2 metres X 1 metre and also to get some big wheels for my Show trolly and some locks for it. Just got back and a man came tomy door i sent hubby as he had a massive arrangement of flowers, they are usually for the woman next door from her sons or for the girl a couple of doors away from her boyfriend but guess what????.......... They were for ME.......... My friend and her daughter and of course Phoebe sent them, they are absolutely beautiful. I love flowers but rarely get them unless its a special day i am going to take a photo so you can all see them i like to share things.... (and to make you all jealous lol lol) Lia you just ask away all your questions i am getting an expert at this job just book me when Lexi's pups are due i love it especially when all goes well but you all know what i am like when things go wrong too remember my friends Mini wire haired Dachsund Megan?

Jodies pups have lovely warm cushioned flooring in their box so i can keepit nice and clean roll on the 26th

Wow time as flown by so quickly Pauline. I remember when you first mentioned about the twins! xxx

Phoned yesterday they had weighed the pups and they had all stayed the same weight Phoebe had eventually left the babes to go outside for a much needed wee. One of the pups had decided to crawl behind mum and lie there crying (she's going to be trouble i can just see it) Its amazing how quick they can move around, my beardies were never as fast as the lhasas for moving, from the moment they were born they would move all over the whelping box.
Just phoned 5 mins ago Phoebe and pups are doing great pups are settling down and feeding great it was amazing to see how good they were with their first feed, its worrying when they don't feed straight away, i remember Tia wouldn't feed any of them until she had given birth to all her puppies whereas Phoebe fed them all straight away as soon as each one was born

 couldnt Mum (god forbid) squash a pup???.......I'd have to be watching all the time!!! I am really pleased to hear that they are all doing very well though

So are you saying that even though one or two pups could be latched on, Mum can still give birth to another while the others are suckling? Or is this me being daft again

1st answer to your question Lia - Phoebe is really carefull and the pup lets her know when they are behind her. I had what you call pig rails around my whelping box that i took off they were more bother than enough. The Pig rails are to keep mum from rolling over and squashing pups but the pups would get themselves under it and was difficult getting them out at times. I think that the pig rails are mainly for bigger breeds or for the likes of Bull dogs that are much heavier.
2nd answer no although Phoebe did eat a treat and some chicken while she was having a contraction!!!!! i only put the pups on in between delivering each pup, this helped to bring on the contractions and as soon as i saw her contracting i removed the pups and put them in a nice warm bed all together.
just had a call they were weighed and they have put on between 1/2 oz and 1 1/2 oz only 1 has stayed the same weight but thats ok so long as they don't loose it.

Oh Im so glad that the pups are coming on and I hope the pup that has not put any weight on pulls through! Could your friend try the Beef Liver Liquid on this pup?

Anyway, going back to the questions, thank you for answering them and putting my mind at rest. I could imagine me with Lexi...........pups hanging off the teets and Lexi still trying to push  I dread to think what I would have done

Joking apart, thank you xxxxxxxxxxx

Canjoline
18-07-08, 08:34 PM
The pup doesn't need the beef liver juice if she started to lose weight and was lethargic then yes but its best to leave her as if she hasn't lost weight then she must be feeding as with babies they can sometimes lose some weight but usually just 1 day then puts the weight on its very early days but they seem to be fine and Lyndsay Caths daughter has been managing brilliantly with Phoebe and the pups. She was there for the birth and helped me to weigh them and re-assure Phoebe

Oh hun what a dilemma.
This may sound stupid but is there any way you can tell how many pups she is carrying?

Bunch
19-07-08, 09:19 AM
Mind you Phoebe is my adopted lhasa too she was no bother when she stayed at my house she's such a sweety and i could see that she really trusted me as with each contraction she looked at me and every pup that was born she let he help and do what was needed, AND of course these are Ollies puppies too so that also makes a big difference so any enquires i get i will pass on to Cath, then any more when Lexi has hers i will pass on to Lia. Any one else having pups let me know and i will pass names on to you too, as i said before its a good way to get the word out about new pups if anyone is looking for one.
XXXXXXXXXX

Thank you so much Pauline for this. Very, very kind and at least I know I can trust your judgement on prospective owners which would be a massive relief!!!! It all depends on when the little madam decides to 'show colour' and also depends on how many she has of course. I will speak to Lexi today and tell her that Im fed up with waiting    xxxxxxxxxx

She can breath Lia don't worry, Phoebe was cut short about a year ago she was shown for a little while but it was Caths daughter that showed her and you know what teenagers are like once the boyfriends come on the scene, so they decided to clip her off. All pups ha ve put weight on the little one lost 1/2 an oz so she went down to 6oz but is now 7 1/4 oz so she's actually put 3/4 of an oz on now and before you ask Lia she's absolutly fine.

Phoebe had to go to the vets last night she wasn't eating as well as she normally does and although no temperature she just seemed a little flat, also Cath had found a lump just beside one of her nipples that felt a bit hard and as she had had a massive scare with her beardie (see Toxic mastitis post) she decided to have it checked out. 1st vet she spoke to thought it was "just" mastitis so she asked another vet who asked Cath to see Phoebe, Cath said that when she massaged the lump she felt milk come out of it she told the vet and she agreed that Phoebe has an extra nipple which wasn't seen before she had the pups and so wasn't properly developed and is probably a branch from one of the main nipples but what the vet didn't want is the milk in this "new nipple" to go sour and cause problems so Phoebe is now on antibiotics just in case. So with a bill for over £100 Phoebe is now quite happily lying feeding her pups.

Thanks Pauline - you know what Im like with my questions  but for obvious reasons, I would like to know :-D

Im so glad that the little one has gained weight and that all seems fine now. That was a bit of a scare about the 'extra nipple" was'nt it and Im aghast that the first vet said it was "just mastitis" because I read your post on this and now know how serious it is!! What on earth made he/she say it like this!!! Mind you, if I had not read your post on this, I would never have known about the severity of it so thanks for that.

I take it that antibiotics will not harm the pups then or Pheobe would'nt be on them.

Vet's bills can be extortionate can't they but Ive always said that money does not come into it when its your pooches health that is at risk xxxxxxxxxxxxx

No Lia the vet was well aware that Phoebe had just had pups and that was the reason for the urgent visit so no the antibiotics wont harm the pups actually probably good for them so they shouldn't get infections as it will go into them from Phoebes milk but they will already be immune while they are feeding from Phoebe, thats why injections are not given until 8 weeks or so because they pups can carry the mums immunity.

Don't forget its the toxic mastitis that the beardie had. Mastitis can be relieved the same as humans with massage and warm cloths on nipples

Thank you once again Pauline.............I need all this education being a 'first timer' and of course I realise now about the immunity from 'mum'...............just like when we breast feed our babies. xxxxxxxxxx

Thats right Lia just wait till Lexi has her pups this will all come natural to you, its great to see someone taking so much interest in this as too many people these days just want their bitch to have one litter WHY!!!! and also some just want the experience without learning anything from it they do no research about their dog or anything else for that matter. i think i put this on the old site It really infuriates me that some people think it is just a way to make money!!!!!!!!! what do they do if they can't sell the pups,or if new owners want to teturn them for any reason, or god forbid they have to have an emergency c-section done at the vets...........then yes i would agree that it would be a way to make money.........FOR THE VET.

Lia you are going about things the correct way and if this is the only litter you - let Lexi have, you have done your homework THOROUGHLY all credit to you
XXXXXXXXXX

Again, thank you Pauline. I, as you know, will not go into this blindly as to me Lexi is the importance here - her well being and then without doubt the pups well being too. I am scared - I make no bones about it - and the more I learn and ask, the better I will feel so I hope you do not mind all the questions because I think I could drive people mad asking all the time but I would rather be positive and educated rather than not. I could never enter this without the knowledge and I certainly do not take this lightly - I take it extremely seriously so thank you for all you have done.................and will continue to take it seriously because I will not stop asking until the pups are here and well are on their way to perfect health and happiness. xxxxxxxxxxx

PS Did you not see the post I made in Lexi's Diary? Its about the questions I intend to ask to prospective owners and wondered if I was correct or wrong or missed something xxxxxxxxxxxx
