Hi All,
Well you all probably know me on here by now and if not I am a Lhasa Apso Breeder and lover, I have been breeding Lhasa's now for 10 years and have always used a pump action anti bacterial spray to clean my puppy pens with.
Well I am here to, well give you all a warning regarding Asda's own anti bacterial spray, which I must admit I have been using now for a couple of years, the problem with this spray is the lack of warning signs it as on the bottle and also the lack of proper infomation it as as well.
Well here is my story, as you all know I had a litter from Belle, who had 7 pups in total, well on the 9th of July 2008 I was cleaning the pups pens out like I normally do by taken the pups out of the pen and placing on the dining room floor to let them have a crawl/run about, well this day was no different until my 4 year old son got hold of the anti bacterial spray when i turned my back, unfortunatly he spray the anti bacterial spray at the pups, he only pressed the trigger 3 times before I snatched the bottle off him, bless him he was only trying to help and only thought the solution was water??.
So I phoned the vet straight away for advice, the vet adviced me to bath the pups and monitor them, well I did as the vet suggested but unfortunatly 2 of the girls deteriated over night and by the next morning they had died, well the other pups looked fine well except one parti color boy who looked abit weary, so I took him to the vets and explained the situation to him, he checked the pup(Alfie) over, the reason he had a name is because the new owners had already named him, well the vet gave Alfie an injection of anti biotics and pain killer and he also gave me some glucose powder and an sryinge and told me to feed him 10ml every 2 hours for the next 24 hour, so I did as the vet explained and after 24 hours he looked like he was getting back on his feet, he was even starting to feed again from his mother, what a relief I thought well on the morning of the 12th of July I woke up and checked on the pups and mum like I do every morning and to my shock Alfie had deteriated over night and had died as well.
So that is my story regarding anti bacterial spray, which now as been emptied away and will never again be brought into my house, I just felt like alot of people should know about the dangers as I know myself that alot of people use anti bacterial spray on the puppy pens and I wouldn't want anyone to go through the same experiance as I went through.
on a final note I contacted Asda about there product and the lack of signs and information on the bottle, but I am still awaiting a responce,
Kindest Regards
Dominic
OMG Dom!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am shocked to the hilt at your story!!!! I was actually filling up when I reached the part about Alfie!!! How tragic and traumatic this must have been for you and your family.
I am utterly gob smacked for want of a word and can only say how very, very sorry I am to hear this. You have lost pups due to this spray and if I were you, I would definitely take this further through a Solicitor if you do not hear from Asda with acceptable compensation. I know that compensation could never replace the pups you have lost but this is astronomical and needs to be taken further!!! This product is obviously a massive hazzard and the lack of information on it gives you the right to claim against them with all guns firing!!!! Don't just sit by each day thinking there might be 'something in the post' - pester them constantly by telephone and log everything down, even down to the name of the person you spoke to - give this a limited time scale and if you receive no joy then go and see a solicitor.
This is serious Dom and Asda should not be allowed to get away with this. Your child was not to blame - children are innocent - at the end of the day, this is supposed to be a safe anti-bacterial solution to use anywhere!!! It is obviously a killer. It is a shame that you did not keep the solution for testing as this may have been, and JUST may have, been a 'one off' whereby something was in it that should not have been. It can happen.
I for one would like hear how you get on with Asda and I hope that the outcome is fruitful.
Once again, I really am very sorry about the loss of these poor pups. This should never have happened. I did wonder why you did not post recent pics of late and now I know why.
I am breeding with Lexi this month and I can assure you I will only be buying any anti-bacterial sprays from my vets. This is frightening but at least I will know that the spray I have will be 100% safe.
Albeit a terrible story, thank you so much for posting this - a lesson is to be learn't from this.

Aw, that's a terrible story! Thanks for the warning because i use that spray. It's heart breaking to hear stories like this. Are the other pups ok?
I think this is the kind of thing you should let the wider dog community know. Perhaps a letter into the letters section of one of the dog papers, just to let folk know. And if you have no joy from asda, take it to a national newspaper.
This is terrible and it shouldn't be allowed to happen again.
Yes Kim is correct here Dom. I would write to Dog World or Our Dogs (infact both) and Im absolutely sure IT WILL BE PRINTED!!!! And also to save money initially from going to the solicitors, the 'Nationals' would not do ASDA any favours at all!!! Now Asda really would'nt want this known would they!!!!!
You have the advantage point here Dom so get on that telephone!!! xxxxxxxxxxx

Wells there not alot to go on in this is there!!!!! I use Dettox and I spray and wipe - no rinsing - and I can prepare food on the surfaces too without having to rinse away. The other one I have used is Cif Anti-bacterial and again, I can prepare food and says nothing about keeping away from animals!!!
This is just basic to 'cover themselves' - it is not indepth.
The only problem I can see you have here is that it does state 'do not allow pets to walk on treated areas' so if you mention that your little one has sprayed the pups with this (even though innocently), you can see that they will throw the onus back onto you. This is the only bug bear as far as I can see Dom.
This is a tricky situation as you will probably realise and it now depends on how you are going to present your case to Asda. What did you actually tell them about the incident? What else did the person say to you when you spoke to him/her?
I'd be interested to know. Lia xxxxx
Just thought Dom, did you ring Head Office or the branch???

I don't blame you one bit for pouring this away!! It just shows we have to be so careful these days in what we buy as it is not always cracked up to be what its supposed to be either! The last thing you want is for the same to happen to you and I tell you this, I will never buy any of their own made products................not any supermarket's own brand no matter who they are!!! I can see you going home with a new safe product and cleaning everything again. I'd be exactly the same! xxxxxxx

Well, first of all my condolences to you and your family Dom. I hope your son is OK after all of this?
I am so so shocked.
There is nothing I can say that hasnt been said already.
I would phone The Sun or another national newspaper. I would get this noticed far beyond this Forum. For the sake of other families and other puppies.
Yes, the bottle may have mentioned pets, but this is no way an indication of just how toxic it is to young pets.
Asda will of course worm their way out of this. All big companies too. But you will feel better if you know it has gone national and no other puppy needs to go through this.
Good luck xx

It should at least say:
Do not allow pets (especially cats) to walk on treated surfaces until they are dry or to lick surfaces that have been sprayed or wiped with this product BECAUSE IT WILL KILL THEM!
or at least .. May be fatal to animals.
I think you have a case!
Mr_Bus8y
16-07-08, 04:39 PM
well it should at least say tested on animals or NOT tested on animals or maybe very harmful to animals if swallowed.
its another case of lets just get it on the shelfs and sell it as long as where earning money from it we don't care about the dangers it could cause and what about if my son sprayed it at himself

Well I finally received a letter today from the wonderful folk of Asda, and here it is in full
Dear Mr Busby
Thanks for taking the time to contact me about the asda anti bacterial trigger spray you bought from your local asda store
I'm sorry to hear three of your puppies died after being sprayed with this product. I can understand this must have been a very distressing experience for you.
After our conversation, as promised, I contacted the product manager for this anti bacterial trigger spray. She's informed me our back of pack claims include:
*Keep away from children.
*Do not allow pets (especially cats) to walk on treated surfaces until they are dry or lick surfaces that have been sprayed or wiped with this product.
We use the packaging guidelines to let our customers know this product shouldn't come in direct contact with children or pets, and if the product is ingested to seek medical advice. Our product is safe and has the required level of information on the pack which covers intended and some accidental effects. However we cannot cover for every eventuality.
This Asda product has been fully assessed for safety by experienced toxicologists. It conforms to all legal requirements - Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging) Regulations 2005 and to internal safety standards. All ingredients are standard consumer product ingredients common to many other similar products.
This product type has a long history of safe use. It's not classified as dangerous and so needs no special label warnings but has full label instructions. It hasn't been tested on animals.
We do know some animals canbe sensitive to the active ingredient when it was used for disinfecting animal housing. It's no longer used for that purpose, only for general household cleaning. This is why the instructions for use tell the consumer to avoid pet contact with treated surfaces. Spraying the product directly onto animals is something which couldn't be anticipated and would involve significant exposure, especially for puppies. We can't warn against all possibilities.
Once again, I'm sorry for this unfortunate incident and thanks for bringing it to our attention. I hope my responce covers all your queries. If I can help further please let me know.
Yours Sincerely
Jordan Anderson

So then why do they specifically mention Cats? couldn't they have mentioned dogs & birds too? do they not think that dogs lick things? They don't know my Ollie and i bet thousands like him that will lick anything i have just cleaned just in case he missed something nice, i am getting paranoid especially with the new beardie pups i have now started using a little bit of detol or savlon in the water to clean the whelping box and make sure its really dry before pups & Jodie are put back in
