I've learned how to bathe, blow dry and groom my Lhasa, but I still need to get the groomer to visit as I can't do the anal glands.
I know it's time when I see Coco doing the "butt dance". My hubby says "look at Coco dancing on the floor. I've never seen her do that before ... don't know where she learned that from..." Hahah!
Does anyone here express the anal glands of their Lhasas themselves? I could get the groomer or vet to do it, but the fee is half what I would pay for grooming, so I might as well wait till it's time for Coco's bath and also time to do the anal glands before I ask the groomer to come over.
Hi Lydia
Ive just found the link below relating to anal glands and there is a video on there that shows you what to do for cats, small and large dogs. See if this will help you.
My three never have had a problem with this but if any of them are a little constipated and I notice they are 'pushing' hard, I squeeze either side of their anus's which helps to push the stool out quicker and easier giving them much relief.
See how you get on. Love Lia xxxx

Anal sacs (also called "anal glands") are two small glands just inside your pet's anus. The material secreted into these glands is thick and foul smelling. Most animals can empty these glands voluntarily for scent marking or in self defense (like a skunk might do). :o
Domestic animals have largely lost their ability to empty these sacs voluntarily. Walking around and normal defecation serves to empty the glands but some animals become unable to empty their glands on their own at all. The sacs become impacted and uncomfortable. Dogs with impacted anal sacs usually scoot their rear on the ground in an attempt to empty the glands. Some dogs will lick their anal area and other dogs will chase their tails. :o

Just a quick anal gland self defence story ....
Wicket was getting his booster last year at the vet. I was holding Raven (who was there for her first jag) and Chris had wicket. I usually take wick to the vet so I know that when you put him on the table he walks backwards and leans against you. Chris didn't remember this and wicket walked back and fell off the table. With lightning reactions I caught wicket by the tail as the vet grabbed his collar so he didn't hit the ground, but the fright of falling off the table led wicket to empty his anal gland all over the vet and .. you guess it ... ME!!!! I was stinking! He barely got me with his spray but I stunk! I couldn't even be angry coz it was chris's fault. Chris just thought it was so funny that I was minging!

Diesel emptied his anal glands at the groomer's where he was absolutely terrified too. Not a nice experience for any of us.........
